There was always a very good chance that Selwyn Howatson would end up in the plant hire game, as his father runs a JCB backhoe loader.
Originally working for his father Gwyn, Selwyn wanted to branch out on his own. By April 1997, the finance was in place to purchase his first machine. From then on, the fleet started to increase and now includes mini excavators, tracked excavators, dumpers and rollers etc.....
As a fan of JCB, as is the rest of his family, the big break for Howatson came when he visited the Hillhead quarry show in 1999. Whilst visiting the JCB stand he purchased a raffle ticket for JCB’s chosen charity, the NSPCC. The £50 ticket had the first prize of a new JS200W wheeled excavator in the green livery of the NSPCC. In March 2000 Mr Howatson was surprised to receive a phone call from JCB saying that he was the lucky winner. Reality only set in when the prize was confirmed by Gunns, the local JCB dealer. A week later saw the Howatson family make a trip to JCB HQ in Rocester to be met by Sir Anthony Bamford to officially hand the machine over.
Working in a 25-30 mile radius of his base, Howatson has a constant, steady flow of work due to word of mouth and recommendation. Now with the new JS130LC on the fleet he feels that there are more opportunities for him to progress and carry out larger projects in the locality. While the size of the fleet will grow according to contracts won, there is a possible scope to increase the fleet with larger plant and machinery.
